Rich history of Lopar

Popularly called the island of sun, sea and beauty, the island of Rab is characterized by a very pleasant Mediterranean climate, warm summers and mild winters. There are 7 villages on the island: Barbat, Banjol, Palit, Kampor, Supetarska Draga, Mundanije, the town of Rab and Lopar. One of the greenest islands in the Adriatic is located in the northern archipelago at the foot of mountaine Velebit.

The rich cultural and historical heritage has attracted many visitors for many years, many of whom are the most interesting; four bell towers of Rab, the Town Lodge, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Monastery of St. Euphemia, Rector's Palace, Bobotine, etc. Of the traditions and customs, the people of Rab are most proud of Rab traditional dance (folklore) and Rab Fair (Rabska fjera)- a medieval festival that shows the life and customs of Rab through the 15th and 16th centuries.

Lopar also has a rich cultural and historical heritage, and it is important to mention St.Marin - A native of Lopar, who sailed to Italy and founded the Republic of San Marino. In his honor, there is a memorial in the center of town. Lopar has several churches: the church of St. John the Baptist - the patron saint of the parish Lopar, the church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary popularly called "U Gospoje", the church of St. Nicholas on Cape Sorinj - the votive church of sailors and the chapel of St. Roch - the votive chapel of St. Roch, which protected Rab from the plague that ravaged the island in the past.

Lopar masquerades (Loparski maškari) are part of a very well-preserved tradition of more than 150 years, marking the end of winter and the arrival of spring. The carnival tradition of Loparan on the day of the Mesopust in a specific and unique way has a ritual in which the whole place participates.

Apart from the rich cultural and historical heritage, rich and preserved traditional values, Lopar is also adorned with beautiful nature. Lopar is known as a sandy paradise with 22 beautiful sandy beaches, and therefore is the place with the most sandy beaches on the Adriatic. Of the most famous beaches, you have to visit is Paradise Beach, which is almost 2 km long, and the rich content on the coast and in the water will not leave you indifferent. Try an aquagan, water park, jet ski, rent a boat, pedal boat, SUP, play beach volleyball or simply build towers in the sand. Lopar is an ideal vacation spot for families with small children due to the shallow and warm sea, but also the safety of swimmers. Livačina and Mel are also beaches worth visiting, but if you still want a little more secluded places, harder to reach and more intimate - we suggest you explore the rest of the Lopar peninsula. Many beaches such as Dubac, Siće, Ciganka, Podšilo are worth a visit. If you are braver and want to try nudist beaches, in Lopar you have 3 of them - Stolac, Sahara and Ciganka. There are also places for your dogs in Lopar - 4 beaches are intended for dogs - Podrapost, Zad Vele Stene, Podpećine and Kaštelina. Every visitor will find a place for themselves!
